Short Description

This course explores the nature and meaning of professional practice, ethics and management within real estate and planning.


The course will be delivered in 3 hourly blocks, once per week, over 6 consecutive weeks.

A reflective essay requiring students to prepare a learning log and analyse their learning and personal development during task based exercises.

Course Aims

The course explores the responsibilities, behaviour and standards expected of those professionally qualified in real estate and planning, and considers the applicability to professional activity of certain areas of management theory and knowledge.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

■ appreciate the nature of professionalism and of professional ethics, and critically engage with what might constitute ethical responses to a variety of practical dilemmas;

■ critically appraise the specific duties and standards owed by you and others when working in professional practice to clients, customers and the wider community and the need for good communication and effective leadership;

■ manage expectations, and recognise and critically appraise the responsibilities owed by professionals to clients, customers and the wider community, including those that are expected, whether by statute or otherwise, in relation to equality, inclusivity and diversity;

■ understand the concept of professional liability in the context of the laws of delict, negligence and health and safety;

■ debate the importance of professional accountability, whether exercised through legal, political or self-regulation;

■ evaluate the importance of effective leadership and team-working to professional and business practices and reflect on other relevant areas of management theory and knowledge in relation to decision-making of individuals, businesses and organisations involved in real estate, planning and urban policy;

■ understand the role of effective management of both human and financial resources in delivering organisational objectives;

■ understand and debate what would constitute ethical practice in a variety of ethical dilemmas;

■ assess their own strengths and weaknesses in a range of strategic, practical, and people-orientated skills and draw up a learning plan to achieve desired improvements;

■ demonstrate a commitment to lifelong learning for professional competence in planning and real estate;

■ test and apply theories and knowledge about negotiation, mediation and conflict resolution; and

■ reach decisions and justify the role of a leader in practice.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.


Minimum requirement for award of credit for students on MSc City Planning, MSc City Planning & Real Estate Development, MSc International Real Estate & Management and MSc Real Estate is D3 or above.


Students on other qualifications then University standard regulations apply.
