Biography

David is a Senior Lecturer in Information Studies and joined the university in January 2022. 

David was Principal Investigator on the AHRC-funded project, "Downloading a new normal: Privacy, exclusion, and information behaviour in public library digital services use during COVID", which ran from December 2020 to February 2022.  David is currently working on the REVEAL Project, funded by the CILIPS Research Fund, which is focussed on producing advocacy materials for library staff in Scotland based on ethical values.

Other recent research outputs have included a role as CI on the RSE-funded project "Electronic Surveillance Laws and Cyber-Security of Journalists in Australia and the UK" led by Professor Angela Daly,  a report in collaboration with Scottish PEN on the impact of government and corporate surveillance on Scottish writers, an exploration of how character building can be incorporated into information literacy education models, a white paper on digital ethics, and a paper on how the hollowing out of public library services has impacted the service in England

David holds a BA (Hons) in English Studies, MSc in Information and Library Studies, LLM in Internet Law and Policy, and PhD in Information Science, all from the University of Strathclyde, and an MA in Philosophy from the Open University.

Previously David authored the book "The Public Library" (Facet, 2009) and was Editor of "Library Review" between 2006-2011 as well as co-author of "Librarianship: an introduction" (2008), and "A Handbook of Ethical Practice" (2007).

Research interests

David's research interests encompass information law and ethics, including intellectual freedom, and freedom of expression, freedom of access to information, digital citizenship, privacy, and the philosophy of information. 

David has also extensively researched around public library policy and development in the UK.

Supervision

I am happy to supervise research students across all of my research interests, which are broadly categorised under the themes of information ethics and law, and the philosophy of information.   I am also interested in any public library topics students may wish to explore, but especially around topics that explore public library ethos and purpose.

I am also interested in topics that consider how the information professions deliver services mindful of the the benefits to society and the rights of citizens.  To that end, topics such as privacy, freedom of access to information, censorship and freedom of expression, are all topics I'd be happy to explore with students from a multitude of theoretical approaches.
