Research interests

I am Lecturer in Heritage Materials Science with a specialism in material culture. My primary research interests focus on developing innovative methodologies and technologies to analyse and interpret artefacts set within the framework of appropriate theoretical models and cutting edge scientific techniques. My PhD thesis exploited museum collections to explore the social meanings of Roman material culture from Roman Scotland.

Since then I have expanded the chronological, material and geographical focus of my research using p-XRF and Raman Spectrometry to analyse elemental composition of a range of material culture classes through the Lord Kelvin Adam Smith Leadership Fellowship, generously funded by the University of Glasgow and Historic Environment Scotland. In collaboration with colleagues from Physics I am developing analytical equipment and software to bring innovation to the field of Heritage Materials Science. I am currently leading several research projects in collaboration with colleagues from across traditional disciplinary divides, including the College of Arts and the College of Science and Engineering. These include:

  • Analysing elemental composition of material culture
  • Recreating polychromy on the Hunterian Museum’s renowned Antonine Wall Distance Slabs
  • Investigating evidence of pigments on prehistoric, Roman and Medieval sculpture
  • Developing specialist equipment and bespoke software for non-destructive analysis and x-ray imagery of archaeological materials and works of art
  • Exploiting and promoting research collections in Scottish museums
  • Contributing to innovation in displaying temporary and permanent museum exhibits.
