Student Ambassadors at Dumfries Campus

Student Ambassadors play a key role with prospective students and their families. Our ambassadors act as enthusiastic representatives for the University and provide a positive student perspective on why the University of Glasgow and Dumfries Campus is a great place to study. 

You’ll provide an excellent and knowledgeable service to visitors of the University campus and prospective students at online and external events in schools and colleges throughout the UK. All work undertaken is fully paid.

Dimensions of the Role

  • To give informative Campus Tours of the University's Dumfries Campus to prospective students and their guests (friends, family, teachers)
  • To attend Open Days and other on-campus events and represent the University
  • To attend and represent the University at large UCAS conventions across the UK
  • To attend and represent the University at smaller school careers evenings cross the UK
  • To promote student life in Dumfries
  • Provide subject-specific information to visitors - your experiences and perspective
  • Participate in online webinars and information sessions about the University

Main Duties and Responsibilities

1. Provide informative campus tours to visitors to the University. Engaging with visitors to find out what they are interested in seeing and ensuring that the route taken is suitable for any visitors with disabilities. Also, be aware where first aid assistance can be found on campus.

2. To provide an excellent and informed campus tour experience to different types of groups including small family groups, school groups and larger groups (up to 20 people).

3. To promote the University and student life at the University of Glasgow to prospective undergraduate students and their influencers (family, friends, teachers) at online events, and at Higher Education fairs, talks and presentations in schools and colleges throughout the UK.

4. Assist School staff with all logistics and stand set up at these events and ensure that relevant literature and marketing materials are always on display.

5. Assist School staff in ensuring that all events are safe for attendees and visitors. Be aware of Health and Safety issues during events such as tripping hazards.

6. To act as guides at Open Days and Offer Holders’ events and other on-campus events. Providing an excellent visitor experience and ensuring that you are aware of your responsibilities and are taking a proactive approach in assisting visitors with enquiries and directions.

7. Providing feedback to School staff after events on and off campus to help us ensure our recruitment activity is effective and provides an excellent view of the University

8. To maintain regular contact School staff to ensure smooth running of events and to manage time effectively.

9. To assist Dumfries Campus in collecting information about how other universities are promoting their student experience. To provide a student insight into what messages and methods of delivery are the most effective.

10. To keep a record of hours worked and submit monthly pay claims to appropriate School staff online.

Knowledge, Qualifications & Skills


  • Current undergraduate student or postgraduate student who is studying at the University of Glasgow
  • Accurate and informed knowledge of the degrees offered by the University, entry requirements to undergraduate degree at the University of Glasgow (using the prospectus as a guide), systems and services
  • Enthusiastic about the University of Glasgow as a great place to study and the town of Dumfries as a great place to live
  • Good knowledge of the campus 


  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills – be able to start conversations as well as respond positively to questions
  • Professional approach – you will be representing the University and should be professional at all times
  • Excellent time-management skills and reliability –  staff need to be sure that they can rely upon you to turn up at events (on and off campus) on time
